Course Schedule

Week-by-Week Geology 101 Class Schedule

Due every week, online, in that week's Lesson folder:

  • Online Discussion Postings (two minimum, three or four is better)
  • Pre-Quiz (a general quiz about the topics of the week)
  • Quiz Question Discussion (for which you are assigned a single question from the Pre-Quiz)
  • Post-Quiz (repeats the same questions as the Pre-Quiz)
  • Lab Preview Quiz (a small quiz based only on the lab Web page and its linked Basics pages)

And now for some fine print! To keep track of when these assignments are due in the online classroom:

  • You should take part in the online discussion during the first half of the week, by Thursday at 5:00 PM, and again during the second half of the week, after Thursday.
  • The Post-Quiz for the week now progressing towards its end the coming Monday and the Pre-Quiz for the week beginning the coming Monday must be taken during extended the weekend, between Thursday lab and the following Monday class. That is, the quizzes must be taken AFTER the scheduled lab ends on Thursday, and BEFORE the scheduled start time of the first class the following week.
  • The Lab Preview Quiz is due by the time the lab meeting starts on Thursday morning.
  • The Quiz Question forum runs from after class Monday until 5:00 PM Thursday. That is, you must post your quiz question solution after 11:00 AM Monday and before 5:00 PM Thursday.
    • In addition, you must not post any Quiz Question solution before the first class of the week meets.

Mini-Bio: Introduce yourself in the online Mini-Bios forum by Friday, April 8.

In Class: Be there every day to engage with the in-class learning opportunities. Most of the credit for in-class learning is earned by being there and making a sincere effort to learn, take part, and complete the learning activity. If you miss a class, an in-class learning activity can sometimes be made up later for 1 or 2 points -- but only if the instructor was informed by you, on or prior to the day of your absence, as to what your intentions are for achieving the missed learning.

Survey: Take the extra-credit introductory survey. The last chance to take it is Monday, April 11, up until 10 AM when the class meets and the next week begins.

Concept Inventory: Take the Concept Inventory before class starts on Monday, April 11. It consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. You will gain extra credit points and be twice as well prepared for the final exam as a result. It is like a pre-quiz -- just take it and see what you know, and you will earn extra credit, even if you miss most of the answers.

Online Discussion: Begin taking part in the weekly online discussion by Thursday afternoon at the latest. Continue taking part in the online discussion during the second half of the week as well. Respond with detailed commentary to at least one other student's posting. Demonstrate that you have read all prior postings. (For example, if the instructor has posted advice in the discussion on avoiding a common error, do not make that error in your posting.) As always, it is your responsibility to cite your sources of information, whether you are instructed to or not.

Lab Preview Quiz (in the Lab Folder): Submit your Lab 1 Preview Quiz online by time the scheduled lab meeting begins at 10:00 AM Thursday. To answer the questions on this short quiz, you will need to have read the Lab Web page (also in the Lab folder), which introduces you to the lab for this week, and any other course Web pages linked to the Lab Web page text.

Lab: Thursday, 10-12 AM. Conduct your laboratory work, following instructions diligently and rigorously. Keep records of your lab observations, measurements, and other results. Retain that information to have with you as you complete your lab worksheet in the days that follow. The lab worksheet -- your completed lab, on paper -- is due by the beginning of lab the following week.

Pre-Quiz (in the Quiz Folder): You will need to have taken Pre-Quiz 1 by the time class begins at 10:00 AM on Friday, April 8. In all future weeks the general pre-quiz will be due by 10:00 AM on Thursday when the lab meeting begins.

Quiz Question Discussion: Research your assigned quiz question and take part in the quiz question discussion, including posting your geological reasoning on what the correct answer probably is. Post your quiz question answer, with your rationale, in the quiz question discussion by 5:00 PM on Thursday. In your quiz question posting, cite your sources of information.

Post-Quiz for this week (in this week's Quiz Folder): Take Post-Quiz 1 after scheduled class or lab time ends on Thursday this week, and before the start time of the first scheduled class meeting of the coming week. If you fail to submit a post-quiz by its deadline, and you fail to notify the instructor before then of any attempt to do so, there is no make-up possible, no taking the post-quiz late. If, prior to the deadline for submitting the post-quiz, you notify your instructor by email of a technical problem that prevents you from submitting your post-quiz on time, you may get an opportunity to make it up, for partial credit that diminishes each passing day. However, there are no guarantees of any kind on any late work, except that they cannot earn full credit.

Pre-Quiz for next week (in the next week's Quiz Folder): Take the Pre-Quiz in the next week's Quiz Folder after the scheduled end of lab time this Thursday last and before the start of the first scheduled class this coming week. A pre-quiz is useless as a measurement once the week of learning is underway. Therefore, after its deadline has passed, there is no possibility of making up a pre-quiz.

April 11 -18

Pre-Quiz for this week (the same quiz just mentioned for the end of the previous week): You will need to have taken the Pre-Quiz for this week after scheduled class or lab time ended on Thursday last week. It must be submitted by the time the first scheduled class begins this week. There is no point in taking a pre-quiz late.

In Class, In Person: Be there each day to participate with other students in learning activities. Most of the credit for in-class learning is earned by being there and making a sincere effort to learn, take part, and complete the learning activity. If you miss a class, an in-class learning activity can sometimes be made up later for 1 or 2 points , but only if the instructor was informed by you, including via email, on or prior to the day of your absence, as to what your intentions are for achieving the missed learning.

Online Discussion: Begin taking part in the weekly online discussion by Thursday at noon at the very latest. Continue taking part in the online discussion during the second half of the week as well. Respond with detailed commentary to at least one other student's posting. Demonstrate that you have read all prior postings. (For example, if the instructor has posted advice in the discussion on avoiding a common error, do not make that error in your posting.) Quiz Question Discussion (in the Quiz Folder): Research your assigned quiz question and take part in the quiz question discussion, including posting your geological reasoning on what the correct answer probably is, by 5:00 PM on Thursday. In your posting, cite your sources of information, as always.

Lab Preview Quiz (in the Lab Folder): Submit your Lab Preview Quiz online by time the scheduled lab meeting begins at 10:00 AM Thursday. To answer the questions on this short quiz, you will need to have read the Lab Web page (also in the Lab folder), which introduces you to the lab for this week, and any other course Web pages linked to the Lab Web page text.

Lab Completion (from previous week): Turn in your completed hard-copy lab worksheet, to finish last week's lab, by the beginning of the lab meeting for this week.

Lab: Conduct your laboratory work, following instructions diligently and rigorously. Keep records of your lab observations, measurements, and other results. Retain that information to have with you as you complete your lab worksheet in the days that follow. The lab worksheet -- your completed lab, on paper -- is due by the beginning of lab the following week.

Post-Quiz for this week (in this week's Quiz Folder): Take the Post-Quiz for this week after scheduled lab time ends on Thursday this week, and before the start time of the first scheduled class meeting of the coming week.

Pre-Quiz for next week (in the next week's Quiz Folder): Take the Pre-Quiz for the next week after the scheduled end of class or lab time this Thursday and before the start of the first scheduled class the week coming up. A pre-quiz is useless as a measurement once the week of learning is underway. Therefore, after its deadline has passed, there is no possibility of making up a pre-quiz.

Post-Quiz from last week (the same one mentioned toward the end of the previous week): You will need to have taken the Post-Quiz for last week after scheduled class or lab time ended on Thursday last week, and before the start time of the first scheduled class meeting of this week. However, there are no guarantees of any kind on any late work, except that they cannot ever earn full credit.
