3-1 Your Digital Footprint

You will spend your entire life building a reputation. You reputation (how other people view and respect you) comes from deliberate efforts you make every day to treat people with respect, behave appropriately, do well in school, get along with your friends and family, etc. What you do online as well as how you present yourself in social spaces online are part of something called a digital footprint. Who you are online and how you behave can help you build your reputation or tear it down. In this lesson, you will learn about ways you can create a positive digital footprint that builds up your reputation with teachers, friends, family, and people you will need to meet and impress in the future.

Activity 1

For each of the videos below, you will use the Text Entry wiki. Remember, you can submit and resubmit assignments as you work through them.

Watch the video titled Digital Footprint. You will meet Zoe. She's having an interesting and sometimes intense conversation with her older sister about things she's posting online. Zoe definitely thinks she knows what she's doing. Do you think her sister did a good job of listening to Zoe while informing her about things that she might want to consider from now on? Overall, did you find this video helpful or not? Explain your answer. (Post your comment in a Text Entry wiki under the title Video 1.)

Watch the video titled Leave a Footprint that Makes a Good Impression below. Think about some of the ways you are leaving a trail. In the Text Entry wiki make a list of the trail you are leaving under the title Video 2. Need help getting started? You could talk about text messages you have sent people, you could talk about pictures you post (where you post them and what they show), you could talk about things you like on Facebook, etc. When you finish making the list, give yourself a grade for your digital footprint so far. A = Excellent digital footprint B = Good digital footprint but there are some things I could do better C = Not bad but probably not helping a stranger who might look at my digital footprint say, "That's someone I would hire for a job someday" D = My digital footprint looks very muddy. I will probably regret a lot of the trail I am leaving someday F = Most adults in my life wouldn't believe what they are reading/seeing. My digital footprint could actually get me in trouble.

Watch the video titled Forever is a Long Time. This is a very short infomercial meant to communicate a simple message. In the Text Entry wiki scroll down to your last entry. Then create a new title called Video 3. What simple message is this video trying to communicate and do you think it did a good job?

Watch the video titled Do You Really Have a Private Life Online? In this video, the characters are having a conversation about whether something should be posted online because it might be seen by someone other than an intended friends. Do you know of any examples from your life (this includes your family or friends) where something like this happened? Open the Text Entry wiki. Scroll down to your last entry. Then create a new title called Video 4 and describe ways pictures you post exclusively for friends could result in a bad or unexpected outcome.

Watch the video titled Your Digital Footprint Is Your Identity. You will need to take notes for this video because there are a number of things the presenters are suggesting you can do to create a positive digital footprint. Open the Text Entry Wiki, scroll down for your last entry. Then create a new title called Video 5. This video was full of good advice. Make a list of the advice given by the teachers and other experts in the video. Next to each piece of advice, write something you can do to practice what they are suggesting. For example, if an expert says a good digital footprint includes communicating politely with people in text messages, I might say that I could read my texts aloud to myself before I send them so I can be sure someone won't misunderstand me.

Activity 2

The videos you watched all used different approaches to connect with you as the audience. Some videos tried to inform, others tried to entertain, still others tried to persuade. Make your own video (it can be short, long, cartoon-like, or more realistic) telling an audience why a good digital footprint matters. You can submit your final video via Media Recordings or File Uploads.
